Guideline for Career and Life Management Action Plan
The Stevens’ Model of Career Development
The Stevens’ Model of Career Development is a developmental based concept designed to initiate career exploration (Opportunity
Awareness) using the conclusions drawn from the self-assessment phase and applied detective, communication and research skills. The
Model requires the scholar to be self-sufficient, but does not preclude the need for-in fact, encourages-talking to and being helped by
others during the self-search problem-solving and decision-making journey. The Stevens’ Model shows the sequence in which a person
should proceed to resolve Worklife direction problems. The Model has six stages. Within each stage, there are specified activities. The
activities the individual undertakes can be with or without the support of a career counselor or mentor. It is necessary to proceed through
each of these discrete stages in the sequence described. To change this sequence could jeopardize the validity and qualitative success of
the outcomes.
Stage One: Self-Assessment
Clarify issues and concerns – Assemble an information base through structured analysis Review current job effectiveness
– Check employment experiences – Abilities – Interests
– Values – Primary wants – Employment environment preferences – Lifestyle
considerations
Stage Two: Interpreting Data
Analysis – Transferable skills identification – Career requirements developed – Resolve
ambiguities – Lifestyle integration – Monetary needs and considerations – Barriers to
success – Identify perceived and real constraints
Stage Three: Opportunity Awareness
-Collect information – Research – Organization information gathering – Reality testing
– Cultivate a network Mentoring
– Evaluate results – Select career action(s) options
Stage Four: Decision Learning
-Evaluate career action options – Trade-offs – Decide on goals
– Prepare Career Action Step Statement
Stage Five: Transition Training
-Schedule career transition actions – Rehearse for negotiations
– Develop strategies for success – Check career action preparation – Prepare requests for
approval – Audit career transition progress
Stage Six: Transition Accomplished
Review of completed career action steps – Assessment of well-being
Model adapted from, A Framework for Career Transition Making by Paul Stevens, Founder /
Director, The Centre for Worklife Counseling
Stage One: Searching Self / Analyzing My Situation
• What is my current level of satisfaction at work?
• What broader life needs do I seek?
• What are my motivating skills, interests and values?
• What do I want in my Worklife role?
• What new learning do I want?
• Which working environments am I most suited to?
• What techniques can I use to help me identify where I want to go with my Worklife?
Stage Two: Exploring this Information
• How do I consolidate all my self-assessment information?
• Have I listed my work role and work environment preferences and my reasons for them?
• How do I use my self-assessment data to develop options?
• Do these options seem compatible with my lifestyle needs?
• What barriers / constraints do I have at this point?
Stage Three: Exploring Opportunities
• What Worklife options are available to me?
• How can I learn more about these options?
• Who can I ask for a reality check on my options?
• How can I test the reality of my Worklife options?
Stage Four: Making My Decision
• How do I decide between my researched Worklife options?
• What techniques can I use to assist me in making my decision?
• Who will listen to me and assist me with my decision-making?
Stage Five: Planning My Career Action Step
• Have I planned what I need to do now and later on?
• What support is available to assist me in making it happen?
• How do I market myself?
• What should I put in my portfolio, résumé or proposal?
• Do my interviewing and negotiation skills need improving?
Stage Six: Auditing My Worklife Renewal
• Have my expectations been met?
• What are the results and benefits for me?
• What can I do to retain the benefits?
• What have I learned from this transition process?
Steven’s Model – continued
Steven’s Model is often described in the following ways:
▪ Activities – the actions you need to take in a particular sequence
▪ Self-Search – identification of the questions you seek to answer, and
▪ Progress – a way to monitor your progress through the Stages.
As a developmental based concept, the Model is designed to initiate career exploration, what Stevens refers to
as opportunity awareness, using the conclusions drawn from the Self-assessment phase and applied,
investigative, and communication and research skills. The Model requires the student be self-sufficient and
encourages sharing and getting help from others during the self-search, problem solving, and decision
making processes.
Steven’s presents six stages, which should be followed in sequence to address and resolve work life direction
concerns. Within each stage, there are specific activities that should be followed sequentially to ensure the
validity and qualitative success of the outcome.

THINK QUESTIONS
Just ask yourself.
When was the last time you did something for the first time?
In order to find yourself, are you willing to lose yourself?
hard, what are you comparing it to?
What do you want from life?
If you think life is
What do you pack to pursue a dream and what do you leave behind?
Why be afraid of
something you want?
Are you the type of person with whom you would spend the rest of your life with?
Do you know that today is your
day?
If you don’t think highly of yourself, who will??
Is it true that you have to see it to believe it, or rather, do you have to believe it before you can see it?
If you don’t have all the things you want, are you grateful for all the things you don’t have that you didn’t want?
Do you doubt your doubts?
What would you attempt if you
knew you could not fail?
What difference does it make if the thing you’re scared of is real or not?
Do you know how to dream
with your eyes open?
If not now, when?
How would you introduce
yourself to God?
Do you know where you are on your journey?
Your destiny is
coming, are you ready?
Can you really live life without loving life; and can you love life without living life?
Do you know that you are the
one you’ve been waiting for?
What is your unrelenting passion?
Do you let yesterday
use up too much of today?
Where does adventure live?
When will you ever have more
time than you do right now?
What are the five things you value most in life?
Do you treat love as a noun or a
verb?
What is the one thing you think of that always makes you smile?
How many ways do
you know to free yourself?
What if the rest of your life was the best of your life?
“Maybe we should start over from scratch”…where is scratch??
Can you really be brave if you’ve only had wonderful things happen to you?
If you had five minutes to live, who would you call and why are you waiting?
Is not every end a new beginning?
If what’s in your dreams wasn’t already inside of you, how could you even dream it?
Do you know that you know far more than you know you know?
What good has worrying ever done?
How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you were?
Who are they that hold so much power over our lives?
Have you begun today what you wish to be tomorrow?
Do you have enough risks in your life to stay alive?
Are you making new mistakes or the same old ones? Do you live from the inside out or the outside in?
What would you think about if you were not taught what to think about?
Are you living a life of action or reaction?
If you give all your love away, what do you have left??
Have you discovered your mission in life?
If you’re not happy with what you have, how could you be happier with more?
What if you lost everyone and everything in your life right now…and then somehow got them back?
What makes something beautiful?
Is it really always better to be safe than sorry?
How do you find happiness??
Where do you draw the line between possible and impossible?
Do you love everybody you love?
How do you nurture your soul?
Are you willing to continually dance with life?
How do you want to be remembered?
What if you looked for the good in everyone and every situation?
Will you ever really know how brave you truly are?
How far would you go to chase what you really want?

Power Questions
To Accompany You CLMAP Write-Up
As a society we are intrigued by questions and burdened by the “need” to have the
right answer. We are uncomfortable with ambiguity so we drive for the answers. Yet
the right question, at the right moment, can be surprisingly powerful, a catalyst for
epiphany and action. see if any of these resonate with your own inner wisdom and to
give voice to some of the silent questions that may be living in you. It is my hope that
at least one of these questions will have you pause long enough to listen to the answer
that may have been waiting for the arrival of the right question.
Are you taking the path of least resistance or are you choosing what you really want?
What would you do if you could not fail?
What is the courageous conversation you are not having – with yourself, with others?
What do you need to let go of so you can move on?
What is the question living in you that needs to be asked?
Are you being true to yourself? If not, what do you choose to do about it?
Who inspires you? For what reasons?
Are you expending your energy in avoiding situations and conflict or creating new
possibilities?
Where in your life are you resigned? What will it take to change that?
What are you struggling with the most (really)? What about the past are you not able to
accept?
What would it take to let it go or to accept the past and present as it is?
Tension exists between what we want and what it is. Where is your tension?
If you were to take one powerful step towards your own greatness what would that be?
If you were five times bolder, what would you be doing now?
“It is my hope
that at least
one of these
questions will
have you pause
long enough to
listen to the
answer that
may have been
waiting for the
arrival of the
right question.”
What five people in your life can you depend on and for what? Who in your life demonstrates
qualities you would like to emulate?
What keeps you away from the thing you love (to do, to have)? What would bring you towards
the things you love (to do, to have)?
What is the response to “who am I?” What is your response to “why am I here?”
What is your response to “what do I stand for?” What is the question you want to be asked?
What am I choosing out of fear? What am I choosing out of faith?
What am I choosing out of love? What am I choosing out of wisdom?
What am I choosing out of power? How does my passion manifest itself?
Where in my life could I use help?
Five years from now what would I say about my life to an old friend who I run into?
What do I believe about myself and how does that move me forward or hold me back?
What do I truly want my life to orient around (like planets orient around the sun)?
What makes me smile?
What makes me laugh?
Who do I need to tell that I love
them?
What do I need for my spiritual
well-being that I am not now doing
or getting?
Where or when do I feel most
connected to myself?
Where or when do I feel most
connected to others?
Where or when do I feel most
connected to God or to the divine
(as you define it)?
Isn’t it time you “paused” to
consider what you will be doing:
– as you transition from work to
retirement?
– as you look for a new job or
career?
– as you notice that you are living
someone else’s life?
This structured is designed to guide you through a process that will help you answer these
questions:
What work or change would connect me with my life long passions?
What can I do more of that will allow me to have more fun in my life?
How can I find what is next when I know there is more in stock for my life.
