Check out this database of popular policy topics per elections from the Pew Research Center on
top 2011 public policy priorities.
e) Check out this Legislator’s Guide from the Texas Public Policy Foundation for a state perspective
on policy topics. You may be able to research a similar guide for a state more pertinent to your
interests.
f) Identify a public policy problem in your local area or one that is affecting you or someone you
know currently. Feel free to contact a local policy foundation in your state or reach out to a
community organization to help you identify a current problem.
g) Using the information above, create a definition statement for a public policy problem. Please
see your text for models.
******Please note: You are welcome to create a random definition statement on a policy problem you
choose. However, you may also want to choose a specific problem or area of interest and carry it
throughout the course in each assignment. These assignments are basically walking you through the
