I choose the topic depression, divorce rates among college educated adults, to answer the
question does having a college degree and being divorced affect the level of depression in adult
females?
Why I’m interested in doing this topic is I’ve taken keen interest to the increasing divorce
rate in the USA and even more alarming statistics show a correlation between those attaining a
degree and levels of divorce
A 2012 study cited by Pew Research center found that an estimated 78% of women with
bachelor’s degrees, and 65% of men with bachelor’s degrees who married between the years 2006
to 2010 can expect their marriages to last at least two decades. Women with a high school degree
or less, on the other hand, face a meager 40% probability of their marriages surviving the same
period.
What I hope to discover is the psychology behind divorce and why education leads to
more volatile family relationships, the emphasis of education and achievement of career, time
spent into realization of career goals, and creation of career women, then is a career woman
capable of maintaining a steady marriage, what are the effects of successful careers versus weak
family ties, hence increased level of depression in career oriented women.
