Answer & Explanation:Now that you have completed your first essay or video, pick another two competencies and you can look the sample assignment(s)…do it again! 3 essays or videos (submitted on Bb then later posted to Digication). Papers/Topics will include evidence of when students have done the work for each competency (include samples -evidence of learning) (total of 30 pts)a.For each essay/video students must demonstrate average proficiency in critical analysis, structuring a topic, and grammar and punctuation, as well as APA/MLA formatting style.New Information:You will need to complete 3 essays or videos that describe how you have shown your level of proficiency in two competencies through one or more learning activities completed throughout your general education classes. Each essay will be awarded a max of 10 points when completed (each competency will be worth 5 points). Videos will be awarded FOUR extra points.Choose two competencies at a time to evaluate in an essay or video. Essays should be 4 to 6 pages long and videos should be between 3 & 4 minutes long and include proper citations. See the folder on Digital Storytelling in Course Materials for tutorials on how to make videos. You can either use one learning activity for both competencies or choose a different activity for each of the competencies. In the essays or videos, describe a learning activity that you have done (provide the example with your assignment) and how you successfully showed proficiency in each section (bullet) of the competency. For example, you have an activity from an english course and want to use it for the Written Communication Competency. So, you need to explain how parts or the whole of the activity include the aspects of the competency:1* Choose and narrow a subject.2* Identify a purpose and formulate an appropriate thesis statement.3* Organize ideas effectively and develop them within a logical paragraph structure.4* Support points clearly with adequate and specific evidence.5* Demonstrate command of accepted English sentence structure and grammar.6* Revise and edit according to standard English practice, including attention to punctuation and appropriate vocabulary. 7* Acknowledge all sources by documenting research according to a recognized manual. You can either use screen shots or quote parts of the activity to explain how this evidence you are providing meets the assignment requirements & competency. So- if you cited sources at the end then you can state that for #7 you documented your research according to APA/MLA etc…then provide a screen shot of the page. Try your best to provide evidence for 100% of the competency components. Let me know if you have a hard time doing this assignment. Email me at vcolemanprisco@mercy.edu.Once you have submitted and I have graded the essay/video to satisfaction, then you can upload it to your digicationportfolio (we will set up the accounts next week).

Oral Communication
I chose the competency, oral communication. This competency I know a lot about
because just last semester I was in a speech communication class. In this class we had to do five
different speeches in front of the entire class. Although it was very difficult to overcome my fear
of public speaking, doing my five speeches worked out well because I got comfortable with my
class. Oral communication is difficult for anyone to overcome, the fear of speaking in front of an
audience is very common and a lot of people have it. Taking this class helped me realize that it
isn’t the worst thing, it also helped me with verbal skills and enhanced my language. Oral
communication is a competency that will benefit everyone in their life, taking this course will do
nothing but benefit everyone.
In this class, whenever it was speech day we would only have an outline of our topic, not
an entire speech to read from. This outline allowed us to improvise and not know exactly what
we were going to say, but just a reminder so we didn’t forget important parts of our speech. This
hits the point in the oral communication competency where you “express information orally,
without reading from a text”. Having these outlines was better because we weren’t just reading
from a paper, it showed that we actually practiced and knew what we were talking about. When
it comes to the first point of have the audience’s attention, I would mostly try and pick
interesting topics that people might want to hear about and gain knowledge. Having the
audience’s attention is very important because you want to feel like people want to listen to you
and want to learn from you, it helps with overcoming the fear of public speaking.
Although in my speech class we didn’t get time in our speeches for questions from the
audience, I still find the feedback to be very helpful. Our professor would take copies of the
outline and write her feedback as she was grading it. The feedback from my professor helped a
lot because she showed me what I needed to improve on, and how to do it as well. Each time I
had something new to improve on and it only made me better. Also my professor would have the
entire class sit in a circle and give each other feedback, whether good it bad it all helped and we
would always make sure to take whatever was said and put it into our next speech, which covers
the point of taking the listeners feedback and incorporating it into our work. Feedback is an
important part of oral communication, it’s the only way you can improve.
When it comes to the point in oral communication of speaking in phrases in proper
English, and good pronunciation, I never had a problem with my articulation or pronunciation.
Although we did write outlines, not our actual speeches, it was a little difficult to talk about each
point and put them into phrases and actual sentences. For example, in my speech about state
standardized testing, some of my points were “Teachers worry about tests and having good
results” and “Banning standardized testing is a serious manner, it could change our schools for
the better”. These were just a few points that I had in my outline to help me with exactly what I
want to say and so I don’t forget important points. In the beginning of my speech, I was
introducing myself and explaining that I have a passion for teaching and state tests is an
important part of that, the point that I referred to, to remind me to introduce myself was “My
major is Education, this is something I study. Also have taken them before”. This point is short
and to the point, not a full sentence and reminding me of the important parts in my speech. Also,
in the speeches we were required to have sources with accurate information. Including these
sources in my outline was required so we knew we had to speak about them. When including
them into my outline, I would have to write out the whole quote from the source so I didn’t mess
up the sentence. For example, “Another professor from the American Education Research
Association, Mary Lee Smith, states that “do what they have to do to get high test results from
their students.””, although in an outline you are not supposed to write full sentences, I had to
write these sentences so I didn’t mess up any quote from the source.
In my speech about state standardized testing, a visual aid was required. Visual aids help
with enhancing your point and giving people something to picture in their heads. My visual aid
was a poster board with pictures of different standardized tests and pictures of students
struggling with their exams. I chose this visual aid because I thought that it would give my
audience a better understanding of just how many standardized tests there are out there and also
have sympathy for the students struggling. This poster made my speech better, interesting and
easier to listen to. Also, it is always good to look professional when giving a speech, this way
you are taken much more serious. Dressing well always impresses people, and dressing well
during a speech is no different. Using my visual aid and dressing well only reinforced that I want
to be taken seriously and I want my audience to be engaged and listening, which goes along with
the point of doing different things to reinforce the point of the oral communication, in this case, a
speech.
The last point in the competency of oral communication is to put information into points
that you understand so you can go further during the speech, also to include references so I can
have facts supporting my main points. In my speech, I had to cite a certain amount of sources
and made sure I cited them when giving my speech orally. For example, “According to, Mary M.
Donegan, of the Journal of Research of Childhood Education, students are caused stress because
they are worrying about passing the test to move on in the class or the next grade”, is a point that
I talked about and had quotes to support my point. Having sources in speeches only make them
better because having supporting information from a professional shows that you have done your
research, you know what you’re talking about, and it makes it more interesting.
Oral communication is an important competency to learn and master in your life. Public
speaking is a great skill to have because it can only get you further in life, being able to be
yourself in front of others and actually know what you’re talking about is a great
accomplishment and every student should have to take a speech communication class.
Appreciating the audience is especially important because you want people to listen to you and
be intrigued. Also, being able to put main points down and remember what you want to talk
about is important, including the quotes from different sources, it shows that research was done
and the points you have are facts. Dressing well and having visual aids may not seem so
important, but if you want to be taken seriously, then it is very important. Oral communication is
not an easy thing, but if you work hard and include all the major points of this competency, it
will be easier than you think.

Speech 110
Outline
State Standardized Tests
I. Do you ever feel like high school didn’t prepare you enough for college?
A. Today, I am here to explain to you why state standardized testing should be banned.
(Understand that people may feel there’s nothing wrong with them, like teachers.)
B. My major is Education, this is something that I study. Also have taken them before
C. Many reasons why state tests are negative
1. Makes students stress out, test anxiety, not good for health

students are caused stress because they are worrying about passing the test to move on in the
class or to the next grade.
1. Ray Hembree of the American Educational Research Association, says
that “test anxiety causes poor preformance.”
2. Students stress about passing class and moving on
B. Teachers worry about tests and having good results
1. Another professor from the American Education Research Association,
Mary Lee Smith, states that “do what they have to do to get high test
results from their students.”
2. Teachers limit what they teach and how they teach, not part of curriculum
for standardized tests.
C. Some students and teachers get nervous for the test and resort to cheating
1. An article in the New York Times by Trip Gabriel, cheating scandal in an
Elementary School outside Houston, Texas. Teacher cheated and got better grades
for the bonus at the end of the year
