Define new historicism as a critical approach and apply it to an analysis of A Portrait of the Artist as a
Young Man.
Critical theory is a set of concepts or theories on which the analysis of a literature work bases to
understand various aspects. These theories as earlier learnt are formalism, structuralism,
Marxism, new historicism and postcolonial theory. My selected topic, I will use the new
historicism theory to criticize the text a portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. I will approach my
selected topic by first understanding the definitions of major literary terms.
New historicism is a term developed by Stephen Greenblatt; this theory seeks to find meaning in
a literary text by dwelling on the historical perspective of it, the period, the occurrence,
prevailing ideas and assumptions of the particular historical era the text was written. These
critics focused on the concept of power and the means by which culture reoccurs in the works of
literature, how culture produces and reproduces in the text.
Apart from the text itself, I will use different additional sources in my research on the topic,
scholarly written materials both primary and secondary sources, past research papers and essays
on the topic and books on literature and criticism such as The New Historicism and other OldFashioned Topics by Brook Thomas. I will use books written on critical perspectives on the text
a portrait of the artist as a young man available online and in the library.
