Memory Strategies
Overview: Tips and Techniques for strengthening your
memory
Is your memory challenged? Do you forget where you left your car keys or forget
information you have studied for tests? Here are top tips for understanding and
strengthening your memory. These tips are based on cognitive psychology and work to
improve information retention, recall and memory.
You can improve your memory!
Focus your attention on the materials you are studying
The Four R’s are Review, Reread, Recite and Rewrite:
 Review any class notes taken that pertain to the information on your topic.
 Reread any initial reading from textbooks, handouts and other information
gathered on your topic.
 Recite important information and specific facts from the class notes and reading
 Rewrite the specific information that is key to the information you are studying.
The key to the Four R’s is exposing the brain to multiple ways of delivering the same
information and that allows the brain to process and store the information in multiple
areas. Six exposures is optimal and using this technique to study can fulfill this
exposure:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Initial exposure in class lecture
Review notes of the lecture materials and reading
Reread the initial information from class and readings
Recite important information and facts from materials
Rewrite key points about specific information
Taking the test
This helps the information to be set into your long term memory!
Build mental muscles by training with regular study sessions
 Cramming leads to short term memory storage and may not be enough to carry
you through longer term studies or permanent information mastery.
 By maintaining regular study times, you are allowing enough processing time
for your brain and this can strengthen your memory for remembering information
and mastering recall.
Much like working out your body, working out your brain can strengthen it. What
are you doing daily for your brain and memory?
Organize the information into structure clusters for memory recall
Information that is stored in the brain is stored in structures called clusters.
 Extend this idea into your studying by using this concepts to organize the
information you are studying
 Experiment with grouping similar terms and concepts together into clusters
 Try condensing information into an outline of the lecture notes and reading
clusters.
Can you visualize your brain clusters?
Recall information using mnemonic devices
 This technique aids in recalling information by assigning simplified linked words
in a memorable sequence.
 When you recall this sequence, you have full access to this information
 Strong mnemonics use positive imagery, humor or novelty
 Experiment with a rhyme, song or joke to help recall specific information.
An example of mnemonics is memorizing the whole notes on the Bass Scale for piano
in sequence: A, C, E, G by remembering “All Cows Eat Grass”.
Can you think of a topic to remember and a mnemonic to represent it for recall?
Elaborate rehearsal technique
This technique encodes information into long term memory storage by approaching the
information from multiple angles.
 For instance, if you are studying a concept: read the definition of that concept,
study the meaning of that definition, and follow that with a more detailed and
deeper description of the concept.
 Repeat the process multiple times (remember six times is the magic number!)
and the memory will be encoded into your long term memory.
How many creative ways can you think of to encode information?
Connect new information to existing information
 As you are studying information new to you, find ways to connect that new
information.
 Making these connections allows your brain to cluster the information together
(new and familiar information) for storage and allow easier recall.
 Thinking of the familiar information then brings up the new information from your
memory storage
What new information can you associate to information that is familiar to you?
Use visualizations to enhance memory and recall
Many people are visual learners and are able to enhance their memories and recall by
tagging the information they are learning with visual cues.
 Pay attention to any photographs, charts and other visuals in your studying.
 If there are no visuals available in the information you are studying, create your
own.
 Draw charts or figures in the margins of your notes or use highlighters or pens in
different colors to group related ideas in your written study materials.
Do you doodle in class lectures? Make the doodles count!
Teach new concepts to someone else
 Studies show that teaching new concepts to others actually further enhances
understanding and recall of these concepts, thereby strengthening memory and
recall.
 Try this technique by teaching concepts that you just learned to a friend or study
partner and see how much this can enhance your recall.
These tips can help students with ideas on how to strengthen their memories and
aid in information recall for tests and projects, adding to their educational
experience.
