Management of HTN:
First line of Pharmacological Therapy: Diuretics or a Beta-blocker or both together
*Diuretics; Lasix or Zaroxlyn
*Beta- blocker: Atenolol or metoprolol
Modifiable Management:
Weight reduction- maintains normal body weight. Body mass index 18.5-24.9 kg/m3
Adopt DASH diet- consume diet rich in fruit, veggies, low-fat dairy products, reduced
saturated fats and total fats
Dietary sodium reduction- reduce sodium intake less than 100mmoL/day (2.4g sodium6g sodium chloride)
Physical activity- engage in regular aerobic physical activity such as a brisk walk (>30
mins/day, most days of the week)
Moderation of alcohol consumption- Limit consumption <2drinks per day for men and
<1 drink for women. (24oz. beer, 10 oz. wine, 3 oz. 80 proof whiskey)
DASH diet Servings:
-Grains and grain products: 7-8 servings/day
-Vegetables: 4-5 servings/ day
-Fruits: 4-5 servings/ day
-Low-fat or fat-free dairy foods: 2-3 servings / day
-Meat, fish, poultry: less or equal to 2 servings/ day
-Nuts, seeds, dry beans: 4 or 5 servings weekly

RISK FACTORS
African Americans are more likely to develop hypertension than other ethnicities,
African americans are also more likely to develop hypertension earlier in life.
Over weight; being obese or overweight
Men before the age of 55 are more likely to develop hypertension than women, after
the age of 55 women are more likely to develop hypertension.
Genetics: if you have a family history of hypertension you are at greater risk of
developing hypertension
life style habits; lack of physical activity, alcohol consumption, too much sodium
intake and too little potassium intake can all lead to hypertension.
What Are the Signs, Symptoms, and Complications of High Blood Pressure (2015,

Symptoms of High Blood Pressure
One of the most dangerous aspects of hypertension is that you may not know that you have it. In
fact, nearly one-third of people who have high blood pressure don't know it. The only way to know if your
blood pressure is high is through regular checkups. This is especially important if you have a close
relative who has high blood pressure.
If your blood pressure is extremely high, there may be certain symptoms to look out for, including:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Severe headache
Fatigue or confusion
Vision problems
Chest pain
Difficulty breathing
Irregular heartbeat
Blood in the urine
Pounding in your chest, neck, or ears

High blood pressure is a common disease in which blood flows through blood vessels (arteries) at
higher than normal pressures.
Measuring Blood Pressure
Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps
blood. High blood pressure, sometimes called hypertension, happens when this force is too high.
Health care workers check blood pressure readings the same way for children, teens, and adults. They
use a gauge, stethoscope or electronic sensor, and a blood pressure cuff. With this equipment, they
measure:
•
Systolic Pressure: blood pressure when the heart beats while pumping blood
•
Diastolic Pressure: blood pressure when the heart is at rest between beats
Health care workers write blood pressure numbers with the systolic number above the diastolic
number. For example:
118/76 mmHg
People read "118 over 76"
millimeters of mercury.
Normal Blood Pressure
Normal blood pressure for adults is defined as a systolic pressure below 120 mmHg and a diastolic
pressure below 80 mmHg. It is normal for blood pressures to change when you sleep, wake up, or are
excited or nervous. When you are active, it is normal for your blood pressure to increase. However,
once the activity stops, your blood pressure returns to your normal baseline range.
Blood pressure normally rises with age and body size. Newborn babies often have very low blood
pressure numbers that are considered normal for babies, while older teens have numbers similar to
adults.
Abnormal Blood Pressure
Abnormal increases in blood pressure are defined as having blood pressures higher than 120/80
mmHg. The following table outlines and defines high blood pressure severity levels.

The ranges in the table are blood pressure guides for adults who do not have any short-term serious
illnesses. People with diabetes or chronic kidney disease should keep their blood pressure
below 130/80 mmHg.
Although blood pressure increases seen in prehypertension are less than those used to diagnose high
blood pressure, prehypertension can progress to high blood pressure and should be taken seriously.
Over time, consistently high blood pressure weakens and damages your blood vessels, which can lead
to complications.
Types of High Blood Pressure
There are two main types of high blood pressure: primary and secondary high blood pressure.
Primary High Blood Pressure
Primary, or essential, high blood pressure is the most common type of high blood pressure. This type
of high blood pressure tends to develop over years as a person ages.
Secondary High Blood Pressure
Secondary high blood pressure is caused by another medical condition or use of certain medicines.
This type usually resolves after the cause is treated or removed.

Personal reflection
First of all, the project work was tremendously successful. The topic for the project was
hand hygiene and germ awareness. The objective behind the project work was to introduce
proper hand hygiene and show the children how germs transfer through our daily activities.
There was a lot of information and experiences that I acquired from the project work. One of the
most essential things I learned from the project was how to work as a team.
Team work and collaboration was extremely essential during the period of the project
work. The project had four nursing student as group members. Each one of the members played
an essential role to assist in putting the project together. The work load was divided equally
among members and each member completed their work within a set time limit agreed by the
members of the project work. Previously, I used to do my work personally and ask for assistance
if I had to but with this project, I learned how to bring together different ideas from four different
members to accomplish a goal. I enjoyed sharing of ideas, making corrections and accepting the
ideas of others. I personally believe working together was a great idea and I would love to work
with my group members another time if I had an opportunity.
Secondly, I learned how to deliver and demonstrate a lot of information within a short set
time limit. Time management is one of the major concerns in nursing school. Three and four year
old children were our audience. The information was conveyed within twenty minutes with all
objectives achieved. A song, puzzle, glitter game and coloring were the chosen teaching
strategies. However, there were two children with special needs. I also discovered how to
inculcate the special needs children in teaching. In conclusion, I learned how children learn, time
management and working as a team to attain one goal. I finally understood how to implement
patience for teaching an autistic child.
