Remember the Titans
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Remember the Titans is a “coming of age” movie that addresses a variety of themes. It is based on a true
story about the consolidation of two high schools in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971 (all-Black George
Washington High School and all-White Hammond High School).
The 1960s was a time of political upheaval in the United States. Social issues, such as racial equality, a
growing distrust of government, growing unrest over the War in Viet Nam, and other issues were
prominently played out on the nightly television news. Title IV of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 specifically
stated that it was prohibited to exclude participation in, deny benefits of, and discriminate under
federally assisted programs on the grounds of race, color, or national origin. This section further
established that this included colleges and universities, as well as local public schools. Remember, local
school districts receive funding from the federal government, so the government has the ability to
regulate the activities of local schools in the US.
This movie illustrates many of the concepts which we will be covering in Organizational Behavior. As you
watch the movie, focus on the behaviors and interactions among the characters in the movie. Skim the
Table of Contents for the text BEFORE you watch the movie. The concepts we will be covering include:
Diversity in Organizations, Attitudes and Job Satisfaction, Emotions, Moods, Personality, Values,
Perception, Decision-Making, Motivation, Group Behavior, Work Teams, Leadership, Communication,
etc. As you watch the movie, write down examples of where you see examples of these concepts. You
are not limited to the set of concepts listed above as I have not included all of the topics we will cover in
this class.
Concentrate on identifying and categorizing the behaviors of the characters in the movie at the three
levels of analysis which we utilize in OB – individual, group, and organizational (see Chapter 1, Exhibit 16 of the Robbins text). Identify and describe the behavioral problems you find in the movie.
The movie is also about change, identify one instance of change that was handled either effectively or
ineffectively.
Don’t worry if you have never studied OB before and are unfamiliar with the concepts! This assignment
is to get you thinking about OB, but rather than simply examining OB from a textbook, it uses a movie to
help you uncover what OB is all about.
YOUR ASSIGNMENT
After watching the movie, draft a paper of no more than 5 pages in length that addresses at least 4 of
the items listed below. You may address more than 4, but you must incorporate at least 4 distinct items

Select any one character in the movie and describe their leadership style
Describe instances of nonverbal communication in the movie
Define the different types of risk-based decision making in the movie
Contrast decisions (i.e., who was involved and why) made at different levels in the movie
Describe instances of functional and dysfunctional conflict in the movie
Describe conflicts throughout the movie at each of the four basic levels (i.e., intrapersonal,
interpersonal, intergroup, interorganizational)
Choose one conflict (big or small) and describe how the affected parties handled it
Describe how Coach Boone followed the phases of planned change
Identify an example of required change and describe how the individual(s) dealt with it
Your paper should be in MLA format. This means appropriate font, font size, margins, citations,
