Responses will be graded for content, length, and
level of introspection. discussion 1Hello Everyone. Glad we are all in week 6. So this week we are asked to
select from three different stories or videos and talk more in depth about one
of them. I chose to discuss the article, The Broken Contract from the
New York Times. This article talks about the three days after the
hurricane struck in Louisiana and the top officials failed to rescue the
thousands of citizens that were held up in a convention center. So, the
contract that being broken by the top officials and the contract is not
protecting and rescuing our American’s from this disaster. A contract of
citizenship defines the duties of care that public officials owe to the people
of a democratic society. The Constitution defines some parts of this contract,
and statutes define other parts, but much of it is a tacit understanding that
citizens have about what to expect from their government (Ignatieff, 2005). This
is a protection to help citizens in protecting their friends, families, and
possessions from the forces beyond their control. The Social Contract Theory
explains the purpose of both morality and government which the morality is to
make social living possible and the government is to enforce vital moral rules
(Rachel’s & Rachel’s, 2015). I would purpose to get the social contract back
by having are government set up and do more for us as Americans. Americans are
no longer binding together as a whole and that starts with the federal officials
from the president and on down. To an important degree, the future of confidence
in American government will depend not on the leaders who failed their trust but
on the foot-soldiers who did not and whom Americans can only hope will do the
right thing now (Ignatieff, 2005).

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/25/magazine/the-broken-contract.htmldiscussion 2After reading this week’s material, the contract that is broken would be a
relationship that the government and Americans are suppose to have with each
other. After the hurricane went through and destroyed many of places and
Americans were trapped in certain places, the were stuck for days. Some
individuals were stuck in such like a stadium and were not helped by any
government officials. The had to wait for some other citizens in the community
to come assist them. These people were stuck in this places for multiple days
without help.
How the society could get things back on track would be for not relying on
“leaders” but rely on people who were able to come together and work together. A
lot of people like to have the control of others and be the boss of everyone,
but this pushes people away. If everyone could work together and be happy and
solve problems together then this world would be a better place to live. “To an
important degree, the future of confidence in American government will depend
not on the leaders who failed their trust but on the foot-soldiers who did not
and whom Americans can only hope will do the right thing now” (Ignatieff,
2005).
A way to get this society back on track would be to start with the government
and move down the line. I think that the government needs to be more available
to the americans and help us more. I don’t think it was fair that after the
hurricane, americans were stuck in the stadium without help. I think that all of
the americans are against each other but we need to come together and be more
helpful to each other.
