One of local issue in the region is poverty. According to the United Nations, 300 million people live
below poverty line of $1.25 in a day. Among actors who create the condition on the global stage
includes governments and trading blocs. Trading blocs established by the developed countries have
huge bargaining power when engaging poor states. The condition is further acerbated by weak
currencies from these poor states. As a result, workers in these countries such as farmers get lower
mounts that the actual cost of their produce. The united nations among is actors working to address the
condition facing the region. An example of policies instituted to that effect is the united nation
millennium goals.
Another local issue facing the region is discrimination against women. Patriarchal approach taken by
most societies around the world serves to empower men while at the same time overlooking women. As
a result, women substantially lag behind in many endeavors in these societies. They include political
sphere, economic sphere as well as the social sphere. United Nations as well as the feminist movement
is example of organizations against the vice. They achieve this aim by agitating for affirmative action to
that effect. Advocacy for pieces of legislations geared towards redressing the vice is a means to this end.
Corruption is another local issue in the region. Corruption is major vice facing the world today.
International anti-corruption academy is an organization that seeks to redress the vice in institutions
around the world. Among course of corruption in the society includes government agencies and other
senior government officials. Example of corruption is misuse of public resources by public officers.
Resources meant for development of a society as a whole end up being used for personal gain. It
addresses the issue by collaborating with institutions both in public and private spheres. Establishment
of codes of conduct and principles of operation such as accountability are among measures taken in this
case.
